When did how many steps per day become a thing?

There is a new question people who spend a lot of stuck staring at a computer screen for long hours, or seeing the inside of a car or another form of transport for a while ask each other...

A question that seeks to overcome the problem and make people feel good that they are doing something to balance this out...

A question that ensures them they are doing something that although they have to earn a living will at least have a good effect on health...

A question linked usually to a gadget that motivates us to try and balance it all out, gives us a number, something we can compare back to our previous attempts...

The question being (thought you were never going to get there, Ed)...

"How many steps have you done today?"...

Don't get me wrong, anything that gets us moving is great...

But when did this become a thing?...

There was a film from the 80s, "back to the future", in I think the third one, where in one of the scenes the time traveller is talking to cowboys in a bar in the Wild West era...

They are asking him with suspicion, with all the easy travel options he describes in the future, does anyone have to run anymore..

He replies "only for sport or recreation"...

They snigger thinking he's had one too many...

But not so long ago, in a normal day we would easily have covered 10,000 steps...

And walking is a great and natural form of exercise...

But for losing we still need to do exercise under some load to maintain or even quicken our metabolism...

Plus we are designed to move in so many different directions...

But simple walking will keep joints from stiffening and seizing and the heart relatively healthy...

The in person personalised exercise routines I conduct or the video exercise sessions designed for Busy business people, although can't be measured are worth many/many steps in one go, even a just over 20 minute session...

It's just a shame it's all come to this, but how ever you do it, certain number of steps, a quick exercise session to balance it all out...

Just do your best to fit it in...

Ed ( someone who joined in building his new house said he was doing easily 30,000 steps per day, maybe I should try that and report back, I reckon the answer would be- I'm incredibly healthy, but looking for somewhere to live since the house fell down) Stride.
